CAI accepting proposals focused on three mission areas »
The Center for Academic Innovation is inviting proposals from Ann Arbor campus faculty to engage in projects in three areas aligned with the center’s mission. The center is currently accepting proposals focused on developing online and hybrid degree programs, adopting educational technology and conducting educational research. The center provides financial and in-kind support from U-M’s Academic Innovation Fund to help faculty and staff develop innovative projects. Each call for proposals has project priorities, submission requirements and deadlines for final proposals. CAI staff are available to consult on potential projects, offering consultation services by appointment or through open office hours.

Nominations sought for 2024 Provost’s Teaching Innovation Prizes »
Members of the University of Michigan community have until Jan. 31 to nominate faculty who have developed outstanding teaching innovations for the Provost’s Teaching Innovation Prize. Unlike other opportunities to honor overall teaching excellence, the prize draws attention to specific innovations that improve student learning. Now in its 16th year, the TIP competition will award $5,000 each to up to five faculty projects.

University adopts statement on diversity of thought, freedom of speech »
The University of Michigan has adopted a statement of principles on diversity of thought and free speech that is “guided by the letter and spirit of the First Amendment” and remains “entirely consistent with our commitment to nurturing a diverse, equitable and inclusive community.” The Board of Regents voted Jan. 16 to approve the “Principles on Diversity of Thought and Freedom of Expression” to make it clear that “as a great public university … we enthusiastically embrace our responsibility to stimulate and support diverse ideas and model constructive engagement with different viewpoints.”

MLK speaker urges courage, love to oppose hate, racism »
As the new year brings continued threats of global war, challenges to democracy, climate change and increasingly powerful artificial intelligence, there is a paramount need for individuals to speak out and act against hate. That was the message that author and advocate Michelle Alexander shared Jan. 15 as the memorial keynote speaker in the University of Michigan’s 2024 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium. “We must speak and act with courage, unprecedented courage, and with love,” Alexander said.

Grants aim to increase faculty-led education-abroad experiences »
Two new grant programs from the Office of the Provost aim to encourage the development of new faculty-led education-abroad programs at the University of Michigan. Funded by the Vice Provost for Engaged Learning’s Global Engagement Strategic Plan, the programs are designed to address the plan’s major goals: increasing and diversifying U-M’s education-abroad offerings and student participation. The plan launched this fall.

U-M announces 2024 MLK Symposium theme, speaker »
The University of Michigan community is invited to explore “Transforming the Jangling Discords of Our Nation into a Beautiful Symphony” as the theme of its 2024 symposium honoring civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Michelle Alexander, legal scholar, social justice advocate, columnist at The New York Times and visiting professor at Union Theological Seminary, will deliver the memorial keynote lecture at 10 a.m. Jan. 15, 2024, at Hill Auditorium. It also will be livestreamed.
