About
Dr. Tabbye Chavous is the vice provost for equity and inclusion and chief diversity officer, at the University of Michigan, and a professor of education and psychology. She leads the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI), working with ODEI unit leaders and staff on initiatives for students, staff, and faculty, as well as in collaborations and partnerships with campus units, and local community and national partners.
As Vice Provost for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Chavous:
- Serves as a member of the U-M Provost’s Leadership Team, working across Academic Affairs areas related to students, faculty, and staff.
- Collaborates with the Provost’s team on faculty recruitment and retention, tenure and promotion, and faculty development.
- Is a senior advisor to the U-M President as the principal adviser on DEI issues and is a member of the executive officer team.
- Provides overall leadership and strategic visioning related to DEI issues, including oversight of U-M’s DEI Strategic Plan initiative.
- Leads the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, including programming and evaluation and assessment units, a central office staff, and a variety of group/organizational affiliates and partnerships.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) leads and supports a variety of university-wide initiatives and guides policy at the enterprise level focused on recruitment and retention of a broadly diverse student body, faculty, and staff, and on fostering the type of inclusive and equitable community at the University of Michigan that is essential to our university’s academic excellence mission.
ODEI’s mission is to serve as a leader, partner, and resource for our U-M campus community, working with our campus units to implement and support the use of evidence-informed approaches and practices that enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion– across our campus, in partnership with local communities, and at national and global levels. This mission is grounded in a vision of U-M impacting the world through providing an intellectually and culturally diverse university community where all have the opportunity to thrive and excel and to use their talents to make societal impacts.

- Center for Educational Outreach (CEO): supports and advances the university’s commitment as a public university to educational engagement for academic excellence. CEO is a critical partner and resource to K-12 students, families, schools, and communities in the state of Michigan, and partners with U-M faculty, staff, and students to develop and implement programs that inform, engage, and inspire a diverse community of scholars.
- National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID): produces, catalyzes and elevates diversity research and scholarship. It’s vision is to empower individuals and institutions to leverage knowledge and skills around the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of diversity in order to create a truly equitable and inclusive society.
- Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI): designs and executes evidence informed, culturally- and community-grounded student initiatives that serve the entire student community, including historically marginalized populations. Programs take a holistic view of student success – supporting academic, social, and personal well-being – from one-on-one coaching to community-wide events.
- Wolverine Pathways (WP): a college preparatory pipeline to the U-M Ann Arbor campus, providing college enrichment and guidance to highly motivated students from historically underserved schools in Michigan. Developed in collaboration with U-M faculty and staff, WP supports students from 7th-12th grades, fostering academic and social development while significantly increasing underrepresented undergraduates at U-M.
