Guidance for faculty who handle or oversee procurement

As part of my duties, I have responsibility for purchasing goods and services for my office or laboratory. Is there any information I should be aware of with regard to potential COIs and COCs?

Procurement Services has produced the document, “Ethics in Procurement,” which provides a set of ethical standards all UM faculty and staff must follow when procuring goods and services for the University (http://procurement.umich.edu/buying/process-policies/conflict-interest). The standards include, for example, the two items provided below:

  • Avoid the intent and appearance of unethical or compromising practice in relationships, actions, and communications.
  • Refrain from any private business or professional activity that would create a conflict between personal interests and the interests of the University of Michigan.
