Conflicts of Interest and Conflicts of Committment

Why does the topic of conflicts of interest and conflicts of commitment matter?

The general public provides for most of the University’s funding through state legislative appropriations, federal grants, tax benefits for donors, and tax benefits for foundations that provide grants. 

As University of Michigan employees, any of our actions that appear to put private interests above the public’s interests may have serious consequences (e.g., jeopardize public support, violate federal grant requirements, or violate state or federal laws).

To maintain a high level of public confidence in the University, we must show that we recognize and properly manage potential conflicts of interest or conflicts of commitment, which you will learn more about in this tutorial.

Each of us has a personal responsibility and stake in protecting the University’s reputation.
