Conflicts of Interest and Conflicts of Committment

Policy Violations

If I were to violate the policy, what would happen?

As a first step, the chair, director, or head of your department, program, or unit may consult with the COI/COC manager and possibly others.

If the dean or director of your unit were to decide that your violation of the policy constituted misconduct, he or she could take disciplinary action against you. The nature of that disciplinary action would depend on several factors, such as the severity of the violation and its impact on the University.

For example, if the violation were minor, the disciplinary action could be a verbal or written reprimand.  However, if you were found to have violated the policy in a serious and intentional manner, the dean or director could take more severe disciplinary action.

In an extreme case, the dean or director could decide to terminate a faculty member or, in the case of a tenured faculty member, to pursue a possible review of that faculty member under Regents' Bylaw 5.09.
