Spectrum Center—The office serves lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people as individuals and as groups, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, allies, their friends and families, and the community at large. They recognize that other social identities intersect with and impact our daily experiences of our sexual and gender orientation, identity, and expression and that not all members of our communities self-identify in the same way. Honoring this diversity, they make a commitment to social justice as we foster student development and personal growth, and they cultivate an inclusive, open, and supportive community through education, collaboration, advocacy, programming, and resource provision.
Office of Institutional Equity—The University of Michigan has a long and proud legacy of commitment to the principles of equality and equal opportunity for all students, faculty and staff. The mission of the Office of Institutional Equity is to provide leadership and support on matters relating to equity, diversity, respect and inclusiveness for all members of the University of Michigan community. OIE staff provides guidance, support and delivery of programming, services and educational initiatives to University faculty, staff, and students to support diversity, inclusiveness, equal access, equitable treatment, cultural understanding and the prevention of prohibited discrimination and harassment.
University of Michigan Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Faculty Alliance—In 1992 a university-wide group of faculty and deans formed the University of Michigan Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Faculty Alliance (UMFA). Activities address:
- University policies. We work on University policies that affect faculty, staff and students with same-sex orientations.
- Students’ academic needs. We help University units meet the academic needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students.
- Curriculum. We work on curriculum development. Issues of sexual orientation are relevant to curricula and the teaching process across the University.
- New faculty support. We try to address the needs of new faculty — providing them with social support on their arrival and with advice and support for scholarly work on lesbian and gay issues.
Each fall UMFA hosts a reception for faculty. Activities during the year depend on current issues at the University relevant to LGBT faculty. Much of our communication occurs through an E-mail group. To join the listserve group, send a message to umfa-mail-request@umich.edu — use the word SUBSCRIBE as the subject. For more information about this computer group, send an E-mail message to Van Harrison (rvh@umich.edu). If you wish to join UMFA or have any questions, please call (in Ann Arbor) Virginia Gordan at 764-5269 (vgordan@umich.edu), James Steward at 764-0395 (jsteward@umich.edu), (in Dearborn) Randy Woodland at (313) 436-9192 (woodland@umich.edu), or (in Flint) D. LGBT Studies—The Academic Minor in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies is designed to provide a basic familiarity with the field of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) studies. The minor offers an opportunity for students to explore how various practices, institutions and beliefs intersect with sexualities and sexed bodies, in a range of cultures, geographies and histories.
Comprehesive Gender Services—The University of Michigan Health System Comprehensive Gender Services Program (UMHS-CGSP) is an academic, multidisciplinary program. This program provides comprehensive health care services for individuals who are transgendered and in need of gender-related care, including endocrinological, surgical, mental and general health care services. UMHS-CGSP is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, Inc, and operates under strict standards of ethics and human rights. The University of Michigan Health System Comprehensive Gender Services Program (UMHS-CGSP) acknowledges that gender identity exists within a broad spectrum. Individuals having diverse expressions of gender and sexuality may have unique needs requiring experienced and supportive health care specialists and services. Therefore, the UMHS-CGSP is committed to providing comprehensive individualized health care services for individuals and their families who are in need of gender-related information and health care. Rackham LGBT Mentoring Guide—This guide facilitates professional communication between LGBT students and faculty would be greatly facilitated if students had a list of LGBT faculty willing to talk about the interface between sexual orientation and the academic world. It is our hope that this directory will serve this function, and that as a result, the quality of our LGBT graduate and professional students’ experiences will be enhanced.
