The University of Michigan has a well-established record of comprehensive and interdisciplinary investigations into environmental sustainability at the local, regional, and global scale. Michigan’s diversity of collaborative projects, research centers, sponsored initiatives, and individual studies contribute to its reputation as a premier research institution. Faculty expertise is readily available to assess and solve the complex challenges of societal, economic, environmental, and political changes that humans face today, while minimizing the impact of our existence on the planet’s natural resources tomorrow.

Michigan’s depth and breadth of research draws upon the expertise of domestic and international scholars, as well as industry thought-leaders in order to develop practical solutions to fundamental natural resource issues. The Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute research support focuses on six critical areas:
  • Energy
  • Freshwater Resources
  • Human Health and Environment
  • Biodiversity and Global Change
  • Sustainable Infrastructure and Manufacturing
  • Environmental Policymaking and Human Behavior
The Graham Institute encourages research projects and programs in one or more of these disciplines with the premise that a collaborative and holistic systems research approach, as well as individual detailed studies, is critical to resolving global sustainability problems.
