Program Description
The goal of the Budget and Resource Management Academy is to better prepare high potential staff members for critical positions in budget and resource management.  The Academy is seeking to deepen and enhance the budget and finance knowledge base of these staff members, to aid in the overall improvement of the financial management of our units, and to reinforce responsible stewardship of U-M resources.

The dates for the 2010 program are summarized below.  The program will be offered in several sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.  All sessions are mandatory and will be held in the Great Lakes Central room at Palmer Commons:

The program consists of five learning modules as described below.  The format for the instruction will be largely active, experience-based learning with activities and case studies:

    1. Financial Structure Module – build a greater understanding of the University’s financial structure and business processes.

    2. Internal Controls Module – enhance the ability to develop, implement and monitor internal controls in a unit by demonstrating successful stewardship of U-M resources.

    3. Budget Modeling Module – extend the ability to successfully plan, develop, execute, report and manage a budget that meets U-M executive and academic leadership expectations, and aligns the resources of a school, college or unit to meet its mission and goals.

    4. Financial Analysis Module – further develop the ability to analyze, interpret, forecast and explain a unit’s activity.

    5. Managing Information Module – further develop the ability to identify meaningful information, synthesize and successfully communicate it to others.

Who Should Attend?
This program is intended for high potential administrators who are on a career development path leading to a senior administrator role with responsibility for budget and planning.  A bachelor’s degree is highly desirable.  This program is designed to enhance existing competencies and leadership abilities. 

More specifically, the Academy is designed to enhance the development of the following knowledge, skills and abilities.  Please consider nominating staff who currently demonstrate some mastery of these areas and/or the potential to develop these skills:

    • Basic knowledge of the U-M funding structure and business systems related to tracking, reporting and managing financial resources
    • Awareness of the most important U-M policies, procedures and guidelines related to their work
    • Ability to generate new ideas or thoughts to address organizational problems
    • Ability to consider all information, sort through issues and apply sound judgment in choosing a specific course of action to resolve organizational business matters
    • Ability to interpret data or information and convey it to others in a clear and concise manner
    • Ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with all levels of leadership, faculty, staff, students and other constituents
    • Ability to develop and lead a cohesive and productive team to meet work goals or projects
    • Ability to anticipate needs and take appropriate action without direction
    • Ability to plan and organize work tasks or projects to efficiently meet organizational needs and outcomes

Nomination Process
Selection into the Academy is based on the results of a nomination process.  The nomination process for the 2010 Academy will take place in the Spring of 2010.  The attached Nomination Form, including supporting materials and signatures, will be required for all nominees.
